The Hawera Gun Club held its Christmas shoot for which .there was a fair attendance. . , The first sweepstake was won by Petrie, with the possible (12), while O’Brien broke 11. The best scores in the Christmas 12 bird shoot were:— Winiki 111 111 111 111 12 J. Sarten, 111 221 112 111 ........ 12 Knuckey, 011 211 111 111 11 Petrie and Knuckey tied on the second sweep with 11 birds each. The gold medal for the best first barrel in these three shots was won by O’Brien. Winiki, Petrie and Knuckey tied in the double rise. Each broke 10 birds in six pairs. An American shoot of 14 birds was won by Winiki with 13. Prizes were donated -by Messrs ■ R. Davies, H. Lavery, W. O’Brien, R. With conditions against Sebring on account of a heavy mirage a'sweepstake shoot held by the Patea Rifle Club on the Patea range was not largely attended. Shooting from both 500 and • riOO yard mounds E. Gilbert with 64 topped the score. N. Coad was runner-up • with 62. The details are:—

WORK FOR SURF PATROL. OHAWE BATHERS BROUGHT IN. The Ohawe surf patrol had its first task on Sunday. Two women were in difficulties near the shore and were promptly brought to the beach. The patrol had lined up ready for a practice, with a “patient” a considerable distance out. An alarm was given, but the principal difficulty was in locating the swimmer in trouble as the water was ■ full of bathers. Eventually they, were found and brought out. The bathers were in no great danger as they were fairly close to the shore. There is a fairly large deep into which they had stumbled. . Had they not been observed the set of the tide would have washed them on to the rocks at the end of the beach." , GENERAL ITEMS. Rabbits were again the subject of lively discussion at the meeting of the Hawera Hospital Board yesterday. Mr. F. J. Bennett reported having seen a rabbit near , his house and another killed some distance away. Several members were convinced that the rabbits were increasing. Five building permits were issued by the Hawera Borough Council in November, two of them being fcr dwelling houses costing about £7OO. A tennis match between Normarfby and Turuturu during the week-end was won by Normanby by 18 sets (104 games) to 3 sets (52-'games). On Saturday infant pupils of St. Mary’s Sunday School, Hawera, were entertained by Misses G. Lendrum and A. Appleyard at Mrs. E. M. Lendrum’s residence and later at the park. Games and afternoon tea were enjoyed. ADVERTISERS’ ANNOUNCEMENTS. With a company of 40 versatile performers Mr. A Lord. MacPherson, Stratford, will present at the Manaia Town Hall to-night “In Old Arabia,” a musical comedy in two acts. There will be pleasing songs, choruses and ballets arid a vein of merriment-runs through the whole performance. Mr. MacPherson’s

productions ’ are well and favourably known throughout Taranaki and the public of Manaia are assured of an excellent entertainment.
