RESIGNATION OF FOREMAN.

CONTROL OF SPORTSGROUND.

The monthly meeting of the Hawera Borough Council was held last night. There were, present the Mayor (Mr. E. A. Pacey) and Crs. W. G. Strange, J. B. Laurenson, A, K. North, G. J. Bayley, E. Morrissey and .R. Mortlock;, . i: Recommendations brought forward from -the general committee , meeting were considered, notably that the council . agree -to the request of the . South Taranaki R.S.A. that any permission for a- street sale' day to other organisations be granted subject to the proviso, that the poppy flower design be in no way imitated; and that it be left in the hands of Cr. Strange to have a notice board fixed at Waihi reserve offering £2 reward for information leading to the conviction of any person damaging the, property. - ■ The works, health and. lighting committee recommended that the .engineer be authorised to take the necessary steps with regard to the flanks at the following junctions. and intersections: High Street and. Waihi Road, Glqver and Waihi Roads,, and. Glover and Turuturu Roads. • < . Receipts for'the'month for the public library were £3O 18s 3d. The numbers of subscribers were 482 (adult), 177 (juvenile) and 10 (intermediate). Books issued numbered 5161 (adult) and 532 .(juvenile). New books .included 46 fiction, 1 travel, 4 general and 19 juvenile.. The borough foreman, Mr. S. Sayers, Who is moving to Tauranga, wr?te resigning his position after, 19 years . service. The council accepted his . resignation with regret and placed on record appreciation of the good service rendered for so long by Mr. Sayers. ■ _ In accordance with the recommendation of the parks and reserves. committee it was decided , that tlje control of the tennis courts should be placed in the hands of the caretaker. Cricket clubs are to be instructed to hold their evening practices on the showgrounds, and the Waihi boundary of the sportsground.

KAKARAMEA SCHOOL BALL. MANY CHILDREN IN FANCY DRESS. The Kakaramea school children held their annual prize-giving and fancydress dance on Friday. The children gave a splendid display’of dancing in their attractive costumes. Prizes were . won by. . the following: Best fancy dress, Joyce and Noeline Morris (Bride, and Bridegroom); original, Jock Wills (Roadside Officer, S.T.A.A.) and Gladys Baker (Work Bag); special prizes, Ross Richardson (Golliwog), Bruce Carmichael (Chinaman), Ron Steer (Maori), Clyde Heal (On Strike), Albert Hall (British Cars). Mr. H. G. Dickie, M.P., presented the prizes and said that he was pleased, at the opportunity as it was the sixth year he had made these presentations. He complimented the children and the parents on the excellent costumes they had made. He also congratulated the judges on their choice of prize-winners.

At the conclusion of the prize-giving supper was provided, after which dancing was enjoyed by the adults till a late hour. Music’ was supplied by Martin’s orchestra. .

Mrs. Gibbs and Mrs. Masters, judges of the fancy, dresses, were presented with two bouquets, also Mrs. Baker and Miss E. Dale, assistant teacher. Mr. Baker, head teacher, received a gift from tlie school children. A Monte Carlo competition was won by Mrs. L. Harris and Mr. K. Carmichael. Mr. C. Lord was master of ceremonies. Mr. H. Hall was chairman. He thanked Mrs. Richardson for donating the prizes for the fancy dresses. PATEA FLUNKET AFFAIRS. NURSE SUBMITS REPORT. Those present at the monthly meeting of the Patea branch of the. Plunket Society on Friday were Mesdames Roberts (president), Haddow, Hamel, Nelson, Ingley, Hunger, Roots, Macken and Jenkins. Silver paper , donations were received fiom Athalie Roots, Peter Parsons, Paul Parsons, Dulcie Mueli, Betty Reed, Wilson Smaill, Standards 1 and 2 and Mr. J Paterson. Nurse Korrell’s report for the month stated: Babies on books, 46; older children, 47; total, 93; new cases, mothers 6. babies 6, others 2, total, 14; visits to office on eight days, adults 61, babies 54, children 17, total, 132; visits to homes, new 9, old 34; total, 43; visits to .outstations on 16 days, adults 103, babies 97, children 20, total, 220.

Mrs. Roberts .reported having visited all the sub-branches during the month. It was resolved that a donation of £5 be sent the Stewart Karitane Hospital and that a garden party be held early in February to enable a further donation , to be made.

The secretary reported that the new scales for Waitotara had arrived and that the photograph of Sir Truby King had been received and would be framed and hung in the rooms.
