CHEER FOR THE BACKBLOCKS
VICTORIA LEAGUE PARCELS. WONDERFUL RESPONSE TO APPEAL There was a wonderful response to the. recent appeal by Mrs.-A. C. H. Collins, president of the Victoria League, for articles to distribute among needy backblocks settlers at Christmas ■ time, and yesterday a number of members was engaged in packing clothes, toys, books and magazines. In view of the numerous appeals for assistance -throughout the year, the generosity of residents of New Plymouth and district was little short of amazing. The goods will be sent out this week to-the district nurses at Mokau and Whangamomona,.to Matau, Tangarakau, Okoke and Kohuratahi in accordance with the league’s aim in distributing Christmas cheer to those less favoured than the residents of more closely settled localities. , The gifts are very wide in the range of their variety, from all kinds of useful articles of clothing, both new and leftoff, to books and -toys for children, shoes and slippers, fancy articles made by the pupils of the Girls’ High School, woolly and knitted toy animals and dolls, mostly made by the- Wendy Hut children, a boy’s scooter, and many other articles of everyday use, as well as • many of the type suitable for small Christmas gifts. The work of sorting and classifying them was no mean task, while it was also no simple, problem, to sort them into parcels for t the various districts so as .to share the gifts with as even a hand as possible among ,the . various to which they are being sent. Mrs. Collins said she Was exceedingly grateful to all those who had sent gifts in, and desired to express her thanks for the many useful articles which she had received.
