Rotorua, Nov. 30. “I Have been coming to Rotorua for the last 12 years, and it seems to me that you are not making the best of the place,” - said Mr. Stuart Wilson, of Wellington, in the course of a chat yesterday. Waitomo Caves were more freely advertised than Rotorua. . People came to Rotorua and saw what there was to be seen, but no inducement was held out to them to come again. There was no doubt that Rotorua could be made a wonderful showplace under up-to-date management. Even the Railway Department, which was becoming one of the bestmanaged. of the Government undertakings, did not appear to use all the foresight necessary in catering for the popu-. larity of the town. Something more should be done than simply to land the people in the town and leave them to look after themselves. “The baths are certainly very fine, but I heard something, with regard to sport which surprised me greatly,” said .Mr. Wilsoril “I understand that the Swimming Club recently held a carnival in the Blue Bath, and paid a small sum for the night. They made a great success of the undertaking and netted a good, profit. Now that it is proposed to hold a second carnival, the Government has put. the price of the bath up to £2O, plus a percentage of the takings. The result, I believe, will be the dropping of the fixture. Such sports meetings as these all help to popularise the town, and it is unwise of the Government to hamper organisations by demanding such a big share of the pro- . - .
