DARGE METEORITES
FINDINGS IN' AUSTRALIA. SAND MELTED-BY HEAT.
Referring to reported : earth tremors and . the ‘ appearance of a meteorite at Gundagai,, New South Wales, Professor H. C. Richards, .professor of 'geology in the University of Queensland, says that there . have, .been" previous recordings in Australia of meteorites on an unusually seals* Professor Richards remarked that at Cranboume, in Victoria, there had been found, partly exposed on the surface, a considerable number of .very large iron meteorites,, in . the aggregate weighing many tons. Recently ■at Henbury, in Central 'Australia, there had been described some large craters, caused by meteroHtes .'striking the earth with’sufficient/force for ithe resultant heat of the impact to bring about-a melting of the quartz sand. Associated with the in tiie surrounding country, a considerable number of fragments-of the stones of meteorites were picked up. Qnppnslard,' Professor Richards said, had at times, been the subject of meteoric showers, Of great interest was. a meteorite from Boula, which .might be seen at the Queensland Museum. From .Glad-, stone and other centres the finding of meteorites had been recorded from time to time. There had been ho instance in. Queensland of a meteorite having been seen to fall, but recently in South Australia, following a description, such as recently had come from near Coota-mundra,-the meteorite was searched for and found. It might be that if careful observation had been made by an experienced observer of the recent occurrence in western New South Wales a search would be equity successful.
