LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL SOUGHT
INGLEWOOD COMMITTEE’S FLAN.
CHRISTMAS TREE ARRANGED. The Inglewood school commitee has decided to apply to the education authorities for a district high school. It is stated that over 40 pupils would attend, and that the establishment of the high school would obviate the congestion at the primary school caused by pupils returning to take post-standard 6 work. In the proficiency examinations concluded at the Inglewood pubhc school on Tuesday 23 pupils passed, two gained competency certificates and two failed.
The committee has also decided that instead of holding the annual school excursion to the beach, it- will organise a great sports meeting for. the children in the local park. The annual class concerts at the school have commenced and are again proving an attraction to the public. There was a good attendance ai the primers’ entertainment on Friday. The concert to-morrow will be by standards 5 and 6.
Fourteen representatives of various local organisations met on Tuesday to discuss departing from the usual custom of the Chamber of Commerce—presenting sweets to the children on Christmas Eve. A suggestion had been made by the members of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union that instead of sweets small presents should be given to the children of two years and upwards. It unanimously agreed on Tuesday that the idea should be carried into effect. Great help has been promised by the members of the division, the Women’s Institute and the: Mothers’ Union, which hope to receive help from other women’s institutions in the town.
It' was suggested that all the school children assemble at the Inglewood school and march to the lawn adjoining the railway at the band rotunda. There from a big Christmas tree the presents would be handed out in the usual manner. It was estimated that approximately 750 children would attend from all parts of the district. The majority of the presents it was hoped would be made, by members of the women’s organisations and helpers. In the event of wet weather it was decided to hold the proceedings in the town hall.
