ODDFELLOWS’ LODGE ACTIVITIES.

* The quarterly meeting of the Kaponga branch of the Oddfellows’ Lodge on Monday was presided over by N.G. Bro. E. W. Snowdon. Evidence of the continued interest in the activities of the lodge was forthcoming in the initiation of another new member, Bro. C. H. Brewer. The new brother was initiated with lodge honours, and extended a welcome by Bro. A. P. Heydon. Advice, was received from the secretary of the Taranaki district (Bro. N. B. Bellringer) that a new branch of the order would be opened at Okato early in December. Members were invited to attend the function. About 15 members subsequently notified their intentioh of making the trip. The proposed debate on the question “Do the Brothers Live up to the Principles of the Lodge and Order?” which was to have taken place, was postponed until the next fortnightly meeting, owing to the indisposition of one of the principal speakers. At a meeting of the ladies’ croquet executive on Tuesday afternoon arrangements were made for the various matches on the club’s greens during the coming season. The first match of the first round for the McUDowie Cup is set down for Saturday, when Okaiawa play Kaponga, at Kaponga. Kaponga’s team will be Mesdames Rothe, Cook, Gallagher and Lewis. It was decided that club day this season will be the first Thursday in every month, when all members and honorary members are invited to attend. The allocation for this week of funds for unemployed workers under No. 5 scheme provided work on the following basis: Single men 1 day, married men up to two children 2 7-8 days, and married men with three or more children 3j days, equalling 7s 6d, £1 8s 9d and £1 15s each respectively. There was only a fair attendance at the Town Hall on Monday evening when the Passion Play of Ober-Ammergau was presented. At the Methodist parsonage on Tuesday evening members of the Wesley Guild held their monthly social, which will be the last for the present year. There was a splendid attendance. The evening was taken up with games, competitions and community singing. Mrs. J. R. Nelson was accorded a vote of thanks for her hospitality as hostess. Prior to the band recital on Sunday evening members of the Kaponga Municipal Band attended church parade at the Methodist Church, where a special service had been arranged. The service was conducted by the Rev. J. R. Nelson, who took for his text “Behold the Man” (John 19, 5). The speaker dealt with the appeal that Christianity makes to manhood. The choir rendered anthems, the soloist being Miss Myrtle Evans. Mr. Penfold, Okaiawa, also gave a sacred solo.

Mr. M. Scanlon is at present in the Kaponga private hospital. His condition is reported to be satisfactory. Mr. O. E. Champtaloup is confined to his home, but is expected to be about again in a few days. Miss Elsie Harding, who had the misfortune to fall and fracture several ribs, is recovering satisfactorily...
