UNION MEETS AT STRATFORD. . ARRANGEMENTS FOR CONTEST. A meeting of the executive of the Taranaki Brass and Pipe Bands Union Was held at Stratford last night to discuss selections for the band contests to be held, at Eltham on March 23. The president, Mr. P. Skoglund, presided and the following delegates were present:— Messrs. A. Beesley and H. Andrews (Eltham), H. McCaskill and W. Clark (Stratford), F. S. Nicholson and F. Morris (New Plymouth Regimental), C. Murfitt and H. Patterson (Inglewood), ; N. Watt and E. Aldridge' (Stratford Pipe Band). The chairman said that as far as he could see Stratford and . New Plymouth were the only B grade entries. Hawera had written saying that they were entering for the 1934 contest at Dunedin and had passed a resolution to the effect that they were not entering any intermediate contests. Mr. Skoglund moved that a letter be sent to Hawera asking them to reconsider their decision and to take part in the, competition. The motion was carried. The march decided upon for the massed bands was “Our Prince,” by John Pickersgill. The 'B grade bands will play the same pieces as are to be played for the competitions at Dunedin. C grade bands will make their own. choice. On the motion of Mr. McCaskill, as a recommendation to the contest committee it was suggested that at the contest all the bands form up as one band in marching to the stand. It was resolved to ask Mr. D. Smith, New Plymouth, to take the part of judge of instruments. The’’ closing date for entries was fixed as February 23. The election of military judges and inspector of instruments was left to the union.
