TENNIS CLUB COMPETITIONS. ..• • • ■ A successful ball was held last week by the Matapu hall committee. There wai a good attendance, visitors coming from Opunake, Eltham, Kaponga, Hawera and Okaiawa, Music was played by Jack Hooker’s orchestra and supper extras were played by Misses I. Eliason and B. Seed. The masters of ceremonies were Messrs. W. Gatenby and T. Huckstep. The door takings amounted to £l2. The tennis match between Kaponga and Matapu had to be abandoned owing to rain on Saturday after about eight sets being played. , Misses I. O’Sullivan and E. OTtowd have donated buttons to be played for handicap doubles. The results of matches played are: Miss E. O’Dowd (scr) and C. Calder (15) holders defeated Miss I. O’Sullivan (8) and P. Tippetts (5) 70—68, and defeated Miss W. Gatenby (12) and T. Guy (scr) 70—85 and defeated Miss Luram (15) and B, Barclay 70—58. The holders were defeated by Miss I. Reid (8) and D. R. McCallum (5) 50-78. Misi I. Reid and McCallum (holders) defeated Miss M. Guy and C. Blair (scr) 70-58. Miss W. Gatenby (12) and T. Guy (scr) defeated Miss Reid and McCallum (holders) 70-62. During the week the following ladder matches were played: Miss I. Reid (challenger) beat Miss I. O’Sullivan 7-4, Miss M. O’Dowd (challenger) lost to Miss M. Guy 5—7, E. Guy won by default from WW. Stevenson. While at school last Wednesday a Maori girl, Mavis Luke, had her leg gashed. The injury necessitated her being taken to the hospital, where she had several stitches inserted.
