METHODIST GATHERING

SYNOD AT MEW PLYMOUTH TARANAKI-WANGANUI DISTRICT. THE MINISTERIAL COMMITTEE. The Taranaki-Wanganui district synod of the Methodist Church of New Zealand held its opening function yesterday morning. A large number of representatives of both the laity and of the ministry are in the town for the proceedings, which are to be continued to day and will conclude to-morrow night. A trial sermon was preached day by the Rev. Raymond' Dudley, M-A.» Wanganui. In the afternoon the material committee met m the Whiteley Memorial Church under the chairmanship of the Rev. Clarence Eaton, chairman of the district. Mr. Eaton welcomed the members of the synod. He made reference to the death during year of the Rev. W. Baumber and the Rev. J. E. Parsons. The Rev. R. Dudley was recommended as having passed in his year of probation. Two candidates for the ministry came before the meeting—Mr. Charles Bell, , who was recommended to the conference for theological training, and Mr. J. L. Mitchell, who was recommended for immediate employment as a probationer. ' At 7.30 last night there was a meeting of the home mission committee. After a brief oral examination' and consideration of the reports submitted concerning their circuit work, three home missionary probationers were advanced one year in their probation. They were Messrs C. E. Roke, G. Skuse and G. S. B. White. SYNOD’S PROGRAMME. Detailed arrangements for to-day s functions are: —At 9 a.m. there will be a communion service in the Whiteley Church, followed by an address by the Rev. C. W. Brown (Wanganui). At 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. representative meetings of the synod will be held and will be followed in the evening by a conversazione. Here a welcome will be given the representatives by the Mayor of New Plymouth, Mr. H. V. S. Griffiths. Addresses will also be given by Mr. E. Dixon (Hawera) and the Rev. Raymond Dudley, M.A. (Wanganui). A musical programme has been arranged. At 9 a.m. to-morrow the meeting of the synod will be concluded, and this will terminate the gathering. Most of the visitors arrived at New Plymouth on Monday and are the guests of residents of the town.
