BUTTER FOR LONDON

RETURNS FOR OCTOBER. AUSTRALIA’S HIGHER OUTPUT. A decrease of 4021 tons in the imports of butter into Great Britain last month, as compared with October, 1931, is shown in the returns of the Dairy Produce Board. The imports in October during the past three years, with the countries of origin, are shown in the following table:—

A total of 12,203 tons of butter was shipped from New Zealand to the United Kingdom during October, compared with 7380 tons in October, 1931. The total shipments from August 1, 1932, to October 21, 1932, were 26,656 tons, as against 17,593 tons in the corresponding period last year. The increases were 4823 tons and 8063 tons respectively. Of butter shipped in October 95 per cent, was consigned, and 5 per cent, sold f.0.b., compared with 85 per cent consigned and 15 per cent sold f.o.b. in October, 1931. Last month Australia shipped 9981 tons of butter, compared with 7841 tons in October, 1931, and 21,444 tons in the period August 1 to October 31, compared with 16,965 tons in the same period last year.

The amount of butter re-exported from the United Kingdom during October was as follows, figures for October, 1931, being given in parentheses: Germany — (5), tons, Belgium 16 (223), Irish Free State 5 (3), Netherlands 1 (167), France 12 (408), Canada 53 (—), other countries 139 (100); total, 226 (906) tons. The estimated stocks of butter in Lon-, don on November 1, including those in private and provincial stores and steamers _ not discharged, was 18,700 tons, against 16,700 tons on the corresponding day last year, and 17,100 tons on November 1, 1930. Stocks in New Zealand, including those loaded into steamers which had not sailed at November 1, and New Zealand stocks afloat comprised 24,292 tons, compared with 19,955 I tons last year, and 16,536 tons in 1930. Cheese imports into Britain last month were 9942 tons, compared with 13,920 tons last year. Details are as follow:—

The estimated stocks of cheese in London, Liverpool and Bristol on November 1 were 9180 tons, against 14,700 tons last year, and 13,497 tons in 1930. Stocks in New Zealand, including those on steamers not sailed on November 1, and stocks afloat, were 15,693 tons, against 12,793 tons in 1931, and 14,563 tons in 1930. Last month New Zealand exported 4658 tons of cheese, compared with 4665 tons in October, 1931. All except eight tons were placed in Great Britain.
