MR. CHARLES RHODES
DEATH OCCURS AT AUCKLAND. WIDE BUSINESS INTERESTS. x Auckland, Nov. 21. The death occurred to-day,- at theage of 72 years, of Mr. .Charles Rhodes, one of the best known business men of Auckland. Mr. Rhodes was probably connected with more varied commercial interests than any other man in Auckland. He was a son of a pioneer family of Waikato. In addition to being local director for the Waihi Gold Mining Company and the New Zealand Mines Trust, positions he held at the time of his death, Mr. Rhodes was connected with the direction of a large number of businesses. Mr. Rhodes was connected with the sale of the assets of the Auckland Tramways Company to the Auckland City Council, and was attorney during the successful windingup proceedings. He was also director of many companies, on most of which he was at one time or another chairman of the board. Among them were the New Zealand Insurance Company, Wilsons (N.Z.) Portland Cement Company, Milne and Choyce, the Northern Steam Ship Company, and Bycrofts Ltd. He was a director of St. Cuthbert’s Presbyterian College for Girls, and also held a seat on the Council of the Auckland University College. Busy as he was, Mr. Rhodes found time to take a keen interest in public welfare movements. One of the Auckland institutions that ■ benefited from his association was the Jubilee Institute for the Blind. He was one of the pillars of the Rotary movement in New Zealand.
Surviving members of the family are Mrs. Rhodes, two sons and tw6 daughters—Mr. Fred Rhodes, of Wilson’s Portland Cement Company, Mr. Eric Rhodes, of the Fletcher Construction Company, Mrs. C. F. Furness, and Miss May Rhodes, all of Auckland.
