UNEMPLOYED RELIEF WORK
EXCLUSION OF MAORIS.
COMMITTEE RESIGNS AS PROTEST
By Telegraph.—Press Association.
Wairoa, Last Night.
At a meeting Of the Wairoa Unemployment Committee to-day members were informed that Maoris registered as unemployed are to be refused work after the current week.
The statement caused condemnatory remarks and resulted in the following resolution being carried unanimously: ‘‘Having learned that the Unemployment Board intends to cut Maoris off the list of registered unemployed we consider there is no justification for our remaining members of the local unemployment committee, particularly in view of the previous notification received from the Unemployment Board that Maoris are to be treated on the same basis as Europeans.” The members of the committee present then tendered their resignation as a body, and immediately left the meeting room.
