Mrs. Roger E. Farrfax-Cholmelcy died at her residence, “Gilling,” Bell Block, on Friday. Mrs. Fairfax-Cholmeley was an indefatigable worker in the’interests of the Church of England, especially of the Sunday school, and she was also ready to help any worthy cause. Her death is a great loss to the community. She is survived by her husband and family. Th© death has occurred at Taumarunui of Mr. John Woolston, aged 66 years. Born at Porirua, Mr. Woolston went to Raurimu in 1903. He was a prominent Contractor at Raurimu during the building of the Main Trunk railway. After going to Taumarunui Mr. Woolston helped, to construct the road tunnel near Aukopae on the Stratford-Taumarunui main highway. He was farming in the Taumarunui county for nine years. Mr. Woolston is survived by his wife and ten children. There are 28 grandchildren. , .

Honour to Mr. W. J. Penn was paid by printers and pressmen from all parts of Taranaki at th© re-union on Saturday evening, when they mad© a presentation of an illuminated address signed by the editors of all the Taranaki newspapers, also a silver-mounted walking stick. Mr, Penn, owing to ill-health, has relinquished th© position of editor of the Taranaki Herald after having been associated with that journal for 47 years. On entering the room accompanied by Mr. A. Weller, who made th© presentation, Mr. Penn was accorded musical honours. Mr. Weller paid tribute to th© worth of Mr. Penn. Messrs. W. C. Weston, T. C. List and J. McLeod also mad© appreciative reference to Mr. Penn. In acknowledging th© presentation Mr. Penn said it was "ratifying to know that in his retirement he was taking with him the_ esteem of’ those engaged in the profession and its allied trades. Though not yet fully restored to health he was already feeling th© benefit of his rest. Mr. C. E. Dowland, who has been appointed Commissioner of Taxes for New Zealand, was born in Dunedin in 1880, and was educated at the Macandrew Road and Normal Schools, and later at th© Otago B'oys’ High School, which he left in 1897 to join the Valuation Department as a cadet. A short time later he was transferred to the Land ana lincome Tax Department, and passed through th© various grades of ™ erl^ l work, becoming an inspector in 1919. Un th© retirement of Mr. D. G. Clark, and the promotion of Mr. A. E. Fowler to th© office of Commissioner, Mr. Dowland became chief inspector. On Mr. Fowlers retirement and the appointment of Mr. Cumming as Commissioner, Mr. Dowland became Deputy Commissioner of Taxes. Mr. Dowland, who is a qualified accountant, was formerly a rowing enthusiast,] and was a member of the board of the Y.M.C.A. for a number of years. During his service in the department the staff has grown from approximately 50 in 1897 t'o 200 officers.
