VINOGRADOFF CONCERT

FAMOUS PIANIST'S FAREWELL. To-day the booking for reserves opene at Messrs. Collier’s- tor the return concert of Paul Vinogradoff in the Empire Theatre, New Plymouth, on Wednesday. Already—to judge from the preferential country booking —there are strong indications of a big house this time to hear this famous and brilliant artist. Intending patrons are therefore urged to reserve their seats early for this, definitely the last opportunity Taranaki people will have of hearing the greatest living pianist of the Moscow school. A quotation, taken from the editorial “Notes of the Day” from the leader page of last Monday’s Auckland Star, is particularly interesting. It is headed “A Link With Liszt,” and reeds as follows; ‘'An unusual compliment was paid to M. Paul Vinogradoff, the Russian pianist, after his recital at the Town Hall on Saturday evening. An elderly musician went round to the artist's room and ti-id: ‘I have heard the o-reat Liszt play, a,nd have shaken hands 'with him. 1 would now like to shake hands with you, and tell you that you are as great a player as he was.’ Needless to say, this spontaneous tribute to his virtuosity was much appreciated by M. Vinogradoff.” The works played on the evening referred to are those" set down on the programme for the farewell performance in the Empire Theatre on Wednesday. They are as follows: Chromatic Fantasia and Fugue (Bach—Busoni), Sonata in A Flat (Beethoven), Fantasia in F Minor, Nocturne in F.Sharp, Sonata in B Flat Minor (Chopin), Five Studies (Scriabin), Poem in E Sharp (Scriabin), Mephisto Waltz (Liszt). It should be noted that M. Vinogradoff will play this programme on the magnificent - Erard grand piano, owned and very kindly lent for the occasion by Mrs. A.. H. Fredric, Jjovon Street.
