INGLEWOOD CYCLE RACES

L. STANDING A WINNER. RACE RUN IN STRONG WIND. Ths Inglewood Cycle Club held th* .fifth of the series of races yesterday. The race was from Inglewood, up. Lepper Road to Egmont Road, down Egmont Road to Egmont Village, along Junction Road to Inglewood. The weather was fine but a cold southerly wind was blowing. Nine riders faced the starter, including the secretary, M. Sanson. The going was very hard with an uphill pull and a head wind going up Lepper Road and from Egmont Village, to Inglewood. This proved too much for the secretary, and he had to retire. At Egmont Village the places were L. Standing, ' Fields, Uncles (bunched), Zimmerman and E. Standing, then Mace-, then the scratch men, Parker and Bourke. The limit men held their lead, L. Standing winning from Fields by a wheel, while'Uncles 1 was a wheel away third. E. Standing was fourth a wheel ahead of Zimmerman. Parker beat Bourke in the sprint for fastest time, with Mace a few yards back eighth. The points for the cup are: C. Bourke ■ 11, J. Zimmerman 8, L. Standing 5, R« Zimmerman 3, H. Uncles 3, R. Uncles 2, D. Fields 1, C. Parker I, - E. Standing 1. Mr. Hanwright has donated a eup for the rider gaining the most points in the last three races. . GENERAL ITEMS. A flag bridge evening was held on Monday, five tables being occupied. Miss , Young, Mrs. Read and Mrs. Zimmerman won. Mrs. Bumip was the hostess. The following draw has been announced for the Inglewood men’s golf > match at Mangamingi during the weekend: S. Lovell 0 and D. Sutherland 12, W. J. Smith 12 and H. Winter 14, C. Nicholls. 13 and S. Judd 18, C. O’Carroll IS and J. Sutherland 16, E. Maetzig 20 and J. Mulholland 20, D. Gow 20 and C. Belcher 20, P. Peacock 22 and Dr. Faris 26, C. Deem 30 and C. Sinclair 30. In the basketball matches yesterday Inglewood Rovers were defeated by Tariki at Tariki by 18 to 5. Inglewood Convent Old Girls defeated Midhirst Wanderers by 14 to 3. ■ ” The following rose bowl handicap matches were played yesterday at the golf links: W. J. Smith defeated S. C. Judd 2 up and 1, D. Sutherland defeated F. Partridge 1 up, Hunt won by defalut," J. Mulholland defeated J. Winfield 2 up, C. Twist defeated C. Winfield 1 up. . . The monthly meeting of the Ivaimiro branch of the W.D.F.U. was held on August 4, when owing to the boisterous, wet weather the attendance was small. It was decided to hold a eiichr® and dance party to raise funds for th® branch. A splendid display of rugs, mats, bags, etc., made.from sugar bags was exhibited by the members. Afternoon tea was served, the hostess being Mrs. Pope and Miss Olson.
