WORK OF WOMEN’S INSTITUTE.

The monthly meeting of the Norfolk Women’s Institute was held recently and was well attended. On account of sickness the demonstrator of barbola work was unable to attend, and Mr. W. Ward, Rv.<y Road, consented to give a moving picture entertainment. This was greatly appreciated, especially by the school ehildfen who were invited to attend. The competition for the best-darned stocking was won by Mrs. Beale. The committee were hostesses for afternoon tea. . , c The institute, with the assistance of Mr. Ward, arranged a picture entertainment, the proceeds of which were for the relief of a necessitous family in the district. After the pictures a dance was held, Mrs. Brown supplying the music and the local ladies supper. Mr. Byrne was master of ceremonies. The Norfolk school committee met on Thursday night. The head teacher . reported that everything was progressing satisfactorily, the term examination being in progress. The chairman (Mi. J. Reeve) reported on having attended a meeting of the Inglewood, dental clinic committee, and it was decided that instead of making a direct charge on parents for dental treatment tv hold a function at the end of the term, and to circularise parents asking for their support. During the term holidays it was agreed to add a number of young trees (preferably native) to the plantation. Congratulations were extended to the football team on being the winners in the western division of the Country Schools’ Association. The Norfolk school is entering a basketball team in the Deare Shield tournament at New Plymouth on Saturday. Following is the team: Pat Brown, Nancy Brown, Gladys Huziff, Thelma Brown, Shirley Reardon (captain), Daphne Roycroft, Ada Laurence, Sadie Byrne, Dawn Reeve. Emergencies, Dons Aubrey, Joan Fischer. Mrs. Kayo has returned after attending, the Women’s Institute conference at Wellington. Mrs, J. Burgess is making a satisfactory recovery from her illness. Master Hugh Brown, who has been in the New Plymouth hospital, has returned home. Mrs. D. O’Sullivan, who has been ill for some time, is making a satisfactory recovery. The Taranaki Federation . executive committee of Women's Institutes held its first meeting at the home of the secretary recently. Those present, were Mesdames Kaya (Inglewood), president, Ramsbottom (Patea), vice-president, Burgess (Inglewood), secretary and Press correspondent, Brown (Norfolk), treasurer, Standish (Tarata), Buchanan (Kaimata) and Fountain (Mangatoki). The committee decided to ask Miss Elizabeth Blake to address a combined meeting of institutes on play-produc-tion and cohimunity drama on. August 20. Mrs. Kaye was appointed delegate to represent the federation at the Dominion conference and school for organisers. The first half-yearly council meeting of the Taranaki Federation will be held at Ngaere in October. The committee congratulated Mrs. Kaye on the success of the handicraft stall which she conducted at the Hawera show.
