SHOT FIRED OVER HIS HEAD
RUSH UP FACE OF QUARRY
By Telegraph.—Press Association.
Auckland, Lost Night.
An unsucceß*ful dash for liberty was made by a prisoner at the Mount Eden gaol this morning. The incident occupied only a few moments, the prisoner stopping and submitting to recapture when a shot was fired over his head.
The prisoner, R. Venables, who was sentenced at Wellington in 1927 to seven years’ imprisonment for indecent assault, was working with others in a. stone quarry close to the Colonial Ammunition Company’s works. When obscured from the warder’s vision by a small shed he made a dash up the quarry face. He was seen by the warders as he reached the first of two wire fences at the side of the quarry. The prisoner climbed the first fence as a shot was fired by one of the warders to warn him that h® had been seen. He jumped to the other side of the fence and waited for his pursuers to reach him, submitting quietly to recapture. It is stated there was little possibility of his making an •Scape’ as he had another fence to negotiate. The prison authorities state the prisoner will not be charged in Court with attempted escape; he will be dealt with at the prison, i
