STRATFORD ITEMS
Miss Mary Walker, who has been the guest of Mrs. A. Coleman, has returned to her home in Auckland. [Mrs. R. Curtis left by ear on Friday morning for a holiday in Auckland. Mrs. S. Shaw, New Plymouth, is spending a few days with her daughter, Mrs. Morris. Mrs. Furrie was hostess for bridge on Friday night. Miss Hilda Henry is spending . her annual leave at Masterton and Hastings. Mrs. Pitt was “at home” to some friends on Friday afternoon. Mrs. Ken Neal was “at home” to friends on Wednesday afternoon. Mrs. Tyrer was hostess to some friends on Monday afternoon. On Friday night a party of Stratford people travelled to Hawera to attend a farewell to Mrs. Frey berg. At the crowning ceremony of the Plunket carnival queen, in addition to other gifts mentioned, each candidate was presented with a silver nankin ring. Miss Ethel Gadsby, who has been staying with friends at New Plymouth, oang two solos from 2YB on Sunday night. Miss Olive Simmons, New Plymouth, is spending a short holiday with - friends at Stratford. Miss Martin, who has been holidaymaking at Stratford, has returned to her home at Wellington. Mrs. Tichbon, who has been the guest of Mrs. J, Crowe, has returned to her home at Christchurch. Mrs. J. Hunt is spending a few days at Ashburton. Miss Turnbull, Dunedin, has returned after spending a /holiday with Mrs. George Carter. Miss D. Hoskin, Cardiff, has returned from Lepperton. Miss J. Jordan, Mata, is staying with Mrs. A. Hoskin, Cardiff. Mrs. Ebbett, New Plymouth, has taken up her residence at Stratford. Mrs. Dagg, Toko, is holiday-making at Kohuratahi. Mr. and Mrs. Dick Platt, Toko, have gone away for their holidays. Mrs. George Hall had a bridge evening during the week, there being two tables in play. Those present were Mrs. Furrie, Dr. Doris Gordon, Mrs. Uniacke, Mrs. Pitt, Mrs. Morris, Mrs. Stevens, Mrs. Richards and Mrs. Green. Mrs. J. F. Thomas was hostess for bridge yesterday afternoon. Those playincr were Mesdames J. F. Thomas, Bishop, Wynyard, R. Carryer, Masters, B. Bellringer, Von Stunner, Hugo, Weston and Ebbett, Misses Jean Jack Son and Molly Lyons, The Midhirst Women’s Division held a social afternoon in the Oddfellows’ Hall, Stratford, yesterday. It was well attended by members and friends. Items were contributed by Mrs. Laird and Mrs. L. Vickers. ‘Competitions were won by Mrs. W. Bunning, Mrs. G. Dill and Mrs. V. Carroll. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames A. Graham, C. Carroll and L. Vickers. The Anglican ladies’ guild held the last of a series of euchre and dance functions m Wednesday night. There was a fair attendance considering the inclement weather. The ladies’ prizes were won by Miss Goble 1, Mrs. C. Whittington 2, Mr. E. Adlam 1, Mr. W. Kovaleski 2. The points prizes for the series were won by Miss Mumby and Mr. E. Adlam. The dance was very well attended. On Tuesday evening a jolly party was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Peters to celebrate the 10th birthday of their daughter Kathleen. There were about 30 children present and a happy time was spent with balloons and games while the scene was made bright with the fancy costumes that the guests were wearing. There was a beautifully iced cake with 10 candles. On July 30 a very enjoyable evening was spent at the home of Mrs. Leyden, Toko Road, when there were from 30 to 40 guests to farewell the Symonds family, who are leaving the. district. Mrs. Symonds, who has been a staunch worker for the Toko branch of the Women’s Division, was presented with a fireside tidy from her fellow members, who wished her success in her new home. Owing to the unavoidable absence of the president and other officers of the branch, the presentation was made by Mrs. M. J. Butler, Toko, late vicepresident. The evening was spent: with games, cards, music and. community singing. The guests received musical honours.
STRATFORD HIBERNIAN DANCE. An enjoyable function was held in the Medina on Thursday by the Stratford Hibernian Society. The. secretary (Mr. P. Lennon) had everything weu arranged. Mr. M. Thompson was master of cer monies. Vinsen’s Ambassador dance band supplied' the music. Some of those present were Mesdames J. Power, R. Woods, J., Bennet, C. Mangin, Ebbett, M. Priest, Von Sturmer, J. F. Thomas, T. Wilson, Sheehan and Clarke, Misses A. Fisher, D. Roberts, Keegan (2), Till, P. McCluggage, M. Lindop, E. Sanderson, D. and H. Grant, B. Taylor, Fitzgerald, Dwyer, Lennon, Aagaard, L. and M. MacDonald.
TOKO PLUNKET SOCIAL. A social arranged by the committee for the Eastern Districts Plunket, carnival candidate was held in the Toko hall on Thursday. There was a large attendance, visitors being present from Stratford, Huiroa, Huinga and other districts. Mrs. Milne, mother of the quCen, was presented with a quilt which was given by Mr. Manoy for the winning candidate. The “queen” was also present wFh the crown and train and the chair in which the ceremony was performed. The scene was a gay one with paper hats and many of the guests were in fancy costume. Some of those present were Mrs. MacDowall, Mrs. Milne, Mrs. Milne (grandmother of the queen), Mrs. J. B. Hine, Mrs. Clemow, Miss Milne and Miss Manoy.
