SPORT AND PERSONAL ITEMS. MEETING OF PLUNKET SOCIETY. The final of the men’s hockey competition in the northern division will be played to-morrow at Inglewood between Inglewood and • Kaponga. These teams have lost only one game during the season and when they • meet on Thursday to decide the winners of the division excellent hockey should be witnessed. The following players will represent Inglewood: G. Barry, H. Evans, V. Timms, C. Short, D. Allen, B. Evetts, J. Thomason, J. O’Neill, R. Evans, R. Evetts, W. Yeates; emergency, J. Preo. The Inglewood Volunteer Fire Brigade met -at the fire station on Monday night to recognise the -services to the brigade of Mr. N. James. For some years Air. James, who is on transfer to New Plymouth, was an active member of the ■brigade and' in later years he was a member of the fire police. In these positions Mr. James always gave his best service and the brigade was sorry to lose him, said Superintendent Crossman in presenting Mr. James- with a fountain pen on behalf of the members.

The monthly meeting of the Inglewood sub-branch of the Phfnket Society was held on Monday. Mrs. Bray.brooke presided. Airs. Braybrooke and Airs. S. C. Judd were appointed delegates to the New Plymouth committee. Thq secretary reported that the net result of the bridge party held at Mrs. Wanklyn’s" residence Was £5 12s. On Thursday Inglewood, will play Stratford Technical High School at Inglewood, and should Inglewood succeed in defeating School, Eltham will win the competition. If* School defeat Inglewood, School will win the, competition. The following players .will represent Inglewood: Cottier, Surrey, Arnold, McLaggan, Linklater, Sutton (2), Borrie, Paterson, Dryden, Peters, Trigger,. Klenner, Bound, E. Standing, . N. Cottier, Corney. Following are the Inglewood vital statistics for July: Births 10, deaths 3, marriage 1. In July, 1931, were 8 births, 1 death and 2 marriages. Mr. F. Brown reports that during July 3.42 inches of rain fell on 11 wet days. In July, 1931, 13.23 inches fell on 27 wet days. Miss Trimble, “Riversdale,” reports that 2.70 inches fell on 11 days. The average rainfall is ■ 10.10 inches. In July, 1931, 16.31 inches fell on 28 days. The greatest rainfall was in 1893, when 24.74 inches fell. The least rainfall was in July, 1902, when .88in. fell.

During the week-end a combined Service Rugby team was defeated by Norfolk Road at Norfolk Road by 33 points to 3. For Norfolk Road E. Dombroski scored four tries, R. Luckin three, Gyde one, West one, J. Douglas one and C. Douglas one. For Inglewood M. Sutton kicked a penalty goal. Mr. L. Brown refereed.

The fourth of the series of the Inglewood Cycle Club’s races will be held on Thursday to the Meeting-of-the-Waters and back. The following handicaps have been declared: Parker scr, C. Burke Jmin., R. Ladbrook Bmin. The Inglewood senior Rugby team returned from Taihape at 4.30 yesterday morning. Owing to the bus breaking down they were delayed on the road five hours. All the members have high praise for the hospitality of the Taihape residents. A feature of the match was the re appearance of E. R. Coutte, who has been in' retirement for some time. He again showed the football fans that,he had not lost any of his dash and generalship. The game itself -was well up to high-class football and impressed the Taihape people. It is the intention of the Taihape team to play a return match next season. At a function during the evening after the match Mr. Co'utts on behalf of the Inglewood players and public made a presentation to Mr. Mullaney of a chiming clock. Mr. Mullaney thanked the donors for the gift and congratulated the Inglew’ood team on their meritorious win by 11 to 8.

The Inglewood Municipal Band will hold a Monte Carlo dance in the Town Hall in an endeavour to augment its funds. The band at present has the greatest membership it lias ever had, and more uniforms and instruments are required. A feature of the programme will be the Monte Carlo dance, for which £3 is the first prize. Very attractive euchre prizes are also offered, the first prizes being 30s, second 10s and third ss, while consolation prizes are also to be given. After the euchre oldtime dances will be interpersed with the modern to enable all sections of the public to thoroughly enjoy themselves. A first-class dance band -with eight players will supply the music and a good supper and floor are assured.
