SUBSIDY ON COUNTY RATES
LOSS TO THE LOCAL BODIES. GOVERNMENT ACTION DEPLORED. That local bodies would be considerable losers as the result of the method adopted by the Government this year in computing the subsidies on rates "was mentioned by Mr. H. W. Martin, clerk to the Inglewood County Council, at the meeting of that body yesterday. The loss to the Inglewood County Council this year would be £lB4 ss. lOd. That loss was caused through the Government declining to pay subsidy on general rates , not collected from ratepayers —no subsidy would be paid in respect of the credits to a ratepayer's account representing a special rebate, even though such rebate was granted to the individual in relief of his rates, and not to the council for general purposes. The action of the Government Was very surprising and meant that the rebate granted would be worth £1902 less £lB4, or £l7lB. The clerk’s estimates provided for £920 subsidy, and now the council could expect only £Bl5 approximately.
