COMMUNISTS SUPPRESSED
ANTI-WAR DEMONSTRATION VIOLENT SCENES AT SYDNEY POLICE ALWAYS TRIUMPH THIRTY-TWO MEN ARRESTED By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Rec. 8 p.m. Sydney, Aug. 1. Though official permission was refused for a Communist “anti-war” demonstration 5000 Communists congregated in Railway Square by the Central Station, but the police sternly suppressed their attempt to form a procession. Several leaders were arrested amid great excitement, during which a Communist banner was torn to ribbons. Women were prominent in the disturbance. The demonstration resolved, itself into small battles with the police throughout the city. A party of seven led by a redhaired woman attempted to raid the Japanese Consulate and the police had to use batons to disperse the gathering crowd. Four were arrested. Many arrests were made in other localities on charges of riotous behaviour and assaulting the police. Altogether 32 arrests were made after many exciting and violent scenes in which the police, who were splendidly organised, always triumphed.
