NEW PLYMOUTH BOROUGH

MEETING OF THE COUNCIL SEWER WORK OBJECTIONS. ALL BUT ONE WITHDRAWN. The New Plymouth Borough Council met last night. Present: The Mayor (Mr. H. V. S. Griffiths), and Crs. R. W. D. Robertson, F. J. Hill, J. Brown, J. W. Darby, P. E. Stainton, R. J. Rente-' cost, F. Amoore and T. P. Anderson. A a special meeting of the council all except one of several objections received to laying the sewerage service through private property were withdrawn, and dt was decided to proceed with the work according to plan.

Saying that although painted white they could easily cause a serious accident at night, the Westown Progressive Association wrote asking the council to remove the telegraph poles in Tukapa Street, between Price Street and Waimea Road. Upon the same subject, the borough engineer reported the poles were not moved back by the Telegraph Department when Tukapa Street was widened two years ago and were now about eight feet out from the kerb. The department had been notified several times that in their present position the poles were a danger to traffic. If the poles were removed at the council’s request the council had to pay the cost. He suggested the department should again be approached with the request that the poles should be moved to their correct alignment. It was decided again to draw the attention of the Telegraph Department to the dangerous position of the poles'. The application of Mi 1 . R. H. Putt for permission to remove pine trees in Glen Road' was referred to the works , committee.

QUESTION OF EASEMENTS. It was decided to ratify the undertakings given to Mr. Benoni White by the borough engineer with reference to the easement to lay a sewer through sections in Leach Street, and that a copy of the letter be handed to Mr, White for the Gommissioner of Crown Lands. The easement signed by MrWhite granting the council permission to lay a sewer through the sections was approved. In reply to a letter from Mr. White regarding the passing of the sewer through his' property, the council decided to forward a copy of the engineer’s comment. The Taranaki Automobile Association wrote making a suggestion for the improvement of the corner of Standish Hill and Barrett Street, the matter being referred to the works committee. The application of Mr. S. W. Wareham for a street light in Manaia Street, Aotea, was referred to the street lighting committee. , The. music week committee was given permission for the New Plymouth Choral Society to perform Mendelssohn’s Hymn of Praise at the Opera House on the afternoon of Sunday, August 14, a charge for admission to be made. The council confirmed the action of the Mayor, and Cr. Stain ton in signing the lease to George Burrows of the kiosk in Pukekura Park. , On behalf of the relief workers’ section of the General Labourers’ Union the secretary (Mr. R. Fulton) wrote thanking the council for the courteous way in which it had received deputations an<j for the concessions granted the men. Consideration of the proposals for a new industrial agreement with the borough general labourers, as prepared by the borough enginere, was deferred.

APPLICATIONS GRANTED., Permission was granted to the New Plymouth League Cycle Club to charge for admission to the racecourse reserve for the circular road race and the usual arrangements were made for the control of traffic in Queen Street and Avenue Road. 4t ,- . ■ Upon the application of the manager permission was given for smoking in the dress circle lounge of the Opera House, subject to certain conditions beihg satisfied. 4 t It was decided to inform the chief surveyor that the council agreed to pay the cost of proclaiming as a street under section 1 of the Land Act 2.8 perches adjoining Baring Terrace forming part of railway land being vested in the council for recreation purposes an access ito the End Reserve. The Commissionei - of Crown Lands will be informed in connection with the street corner dedication by Mr. 1.. M. Campbell that the council at its own cost will carry out the following works required by him: Re-erect the gate; reconstruct in workmanlike manner in concrete the footpath step; re-fence the corner and replant hedge. The borough engineer reported that he had temporarily repaired the fence between Glen Struan and Mr. Somerton s property and had written Mr. Somerton asking him to agree to pay for half of a new sheep-proof fence to cost £5. In reply to his offer of spoil from his section near Turehu Street for Te Mete Park Mr. Stanley Smith will be supplied with a copy of the borough engineer’s report and informed, that under the circumstances the council is unable to accept his offer. The engineer was authorised to endeavour to obtain from Mrs. Short free of ■ compensation the necessary land to provide for the additional entrance, to Te Mete Park suggested by Mr. Smith.

FITZROY AFFAIRS. The following replies will be given to the Fitzroy Ratepayers’ Association: (a) Record Street: The re-metalling of. this street from Barriball Street to Waitako Street, Waitako Street and Ropiha Street at an estimated cost of £2OO was authorised by the council at its last meeting, (b) Railway bridge in Mahoe Street, request for footway: No .funds are available for this work. Consideration of the request of the Plunket Society that no reduction he made in the rent paid by the council for the women’s rest room was deferred. The engineer was authorised to kerb and channel the footpath on the western side of Cutfield Road, from South Road to Hine Street. The works committee reported on a conference with Messrs. Tremlett and O. W. Sole, representing the* Master Butchers’ Association. As a result the following recommendations were approved by the council: That Messrs. W. Hellier and others, contractors for slaughtering at the abattoirs, be informed, that the council cannot accede to their request that the existing contract be amended to provide that notice by either party of the determination of the contract shall be -given only in the of August in any year; that Mr. A. McMullian be informed that, the council cannot grant his application for permission to cart offal across the abattoir paddocks to the boiling down .works at Mr. Mack’s property; that vehicular and horse traffic in the abattoir reserve e strictly confined to council traffic anc to traffic connected with the business of the abattoir, and that trespassing e prohibited; that consideration of toe general question of the removal of offal

from the abattoir be deferred pending further inquiries to be made by the works committee. ELECTRIC LIGHTING. On the recommendation of the council committee the following replies will be sent to the Fitzroy Ratepayers’ Association: (a) Trees overhanging electric light and telegraph wires in Paynter’s Avenue: The trees are oh Mr. Brenmuhl’s property and the electrical engineer reports that Mr. Brenmuhl has undertaken to remove them as soon as possible, (b) Extra lighting required in Nobs Line and Karainu Street: These matters have been referred to the. special lighting committee, which meets in February. (c) Mangorei Road tram .shelter in untidy state during week-ends; That a copy of the tramways manager’s report be forwarded to the association. , Consideration of the electrical engineer’s report on alternative rates foi large industrial power consumers was deferred, and in the meantime the electrical engineer will supply further information desired by the committee. The electrical engineer was authorised to lend- the Rotary Club for a few days and to instal it free of charge,, a smal electric motor for working in connec- | ti-on with, the kindling wood scheme.
