NORTHERN PRIMARY RUGBY

SHIELD WON BY WEST END. INGLEWOOD BEATEN IN FINAL. , The North Taranaki primary school Rugby football championship for the association shield was played at Inglewood on Saturday between Inglewood and West End. West End won by 11 points to six. The game was hardfought and attracted many spectators. The West End backs were superior to Inglewood, while the Inglewood forwards held their own against a heavier pack. The first fivereighths of West End (Johns) was too clever for the opposing backs, and by timely cuttingin he secured three tries, one of which was converted by Hawke. In the Inglewood pack Winter played a hard game and his mates were content to help him occasionally. The backs lacked combination and rarely was there any good passing back movement. Julian scored for Inglewood and Young from a penalty easily goaled. The game ended with the score 11 to six in favour of West End. Mr. F. Julian refereed.

After the match the teams and public gathered. Father Henley (New Plymouth) presented the shield to the winning team. In congratulating the team on gaining the shield, he said, they must not forget the Inglewood boys, who had played a hard game for it. The Convent team, winner of the shield last year, was sorry to lose it, but after all the game was played for the game’s sake and not just for the shield. Father Henley presented the shield to Master Hawker, captain of the West End team.

Mr. McKinney, on behalf of the Inglewood team, congratulated the winners and hoped the team woAd keep the shield during the following season. He thought it was an excellent game played in a god sporting spirit. At his call the winning team was cheered.
