“The society has continued its active work during the last 12 months,” states the annual. report of the Native Bird Protection Society. “Very numerous matters relating to the welfare of our native birds and forests continue to be dealt with day by day. The bird charts by bird albums, as they are now to'be designated, are in the course of being printed. This will take some months and utilise most of the funds at our command. The importance of the exclusion of plant-eating animals from our forests has continued to be emphasised by us, and this necessity is now being more realised by the public generally.” The report states that some effort has been directed by the Department of In? ternal Affairs, which undertook to handle the extermination of the deer, but, owing to the depression these efforts fell far short of requirements. The bright spot was that some progress had been made toward securing a profitable price for deer hides.
