CENTRAL SCHOOL

ROLL NUMBER DECREASING MEETING OF COMMITTEE. Present at the monthly meeting of the Central school committee at New Plymouth were Messrs. F. A. Coleman (chairman), J,i O. Turner,’F. S. Nicholson, E. Hodder, W. Huggett, H. Broad, F. Potter, A. Dunkley and A. Feakins (honorary secretary). The headmaster (Mr. D. P. .Evans) reported: Number on roll at . commencement of term (May 23), 782; admitted, 9; withdrawn, 16; present roll, 770; average attendance, 721; average or weekly roll, 773.9; percentage of attendances, 93(1. The number on the roll was gradually declining. A. drop in average attendance below 720 would mean the loss of another permanent assistant. Families were removing to. suburban areas or into the country. Owing, to the prevalence of colds and other minor ailments, the attendance for last week had shown a decided decline. L Misses Phillips and Ross, who were appointed as “rationed” teachers for tne first time, had left, the positions they vacated being filled by Misses Mullon and Haylock, whose appointments were to extend to th© end of the second term, when two other temporary assistants would be appointed, It was obvious that the progress of the pupils would be seriously affected by these frequent changes of staff. In Miss D. A. Hogg, who had received promotion ax second’ grade assistant at the West End school, Qentral lost an excellent teacher who ; liad given many years of faithful service at the niain '.school. Hfer position had been filled by Miss Godfrey, who had received notice to leave on account of a fall in the grade of tho school. Working in conjunction with the National Council of Women, the scholars of the school were giving fine service by collecting parcels for the pound scheme each week. The response to the appeal had been splendid, no fewer than seven full cases being collected last week. It was decided to place on record the commitee’s appreciation of Miss Hogg’s services as a member of the staff, and to congratulate her on her promotion. .The work of improving the Pendarves Street entrance to the school grounds is to be proceeded with in accordance with the scheme outlined in the visiting committee’s report. Trees will be removed to allow for filling and levellilng the corner.

...It was decided to divide ths committee into three sub-committees consisting of grounds, building and finance, and that the future visiting committee should consist -of a. member from each of the three.
