CYCLONE AT WHAKATANE

ROOF HURLED AGAINST HOUSE.

DARKENED TOWN MUCH DAMAGED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. A cyclonic storm of terrific force struck Whakatane to-night, doing much damage in the central portion of the town. The roof of iron and timber was torn off the power board building and hurled in all directions, portion crashing on to a, boardinghouse next door. A boarder in an upstairs bedroom had a narrow escape.

Several houses occupied by Maoris were unroofed and several chains of power lines were demolished, Whakatane being plunged into darkness. Considerable damage was done in other parts of the town. Nobody, was injured
