CONTROL OF RUGBY GAMES
COMPLAINT AT REFEREEING.
DECISIONS OF THE UNION. The secretary of the Hawera Club wrote to the Taranaki Rugby Union last night that the match between Hawera and Opunake thirds on May 14 was refereed by a player from the Opunake Club as the, official referee did not appear. The Hawera team were dissatisfied with the control of the game and asked that it should be replayed. The secretary of the Eltham Club wrote entering a protest against the manner in which the game Eltham fourths v. Waimate fourths on May 21 was refereed. The writer claimed that the Eltham team "could not have won even if they were All Blacks.” . He pointed out that though Mr. Christie, the referee appointed to take the match, was on the ground a Native named Ruru refereed.
It was stated that apparently prior to the games the teams did,mot object to the referee, so that no action would now be taken in regard to the game. It was resolved to write to the referee through the Referees’ Association asking for an explanation. It was decided, that in. the event of the referee appointed not being avail-; able the home team must see that the captains of 1 the two teams agree prior to the match to the substitute. The referee in the Toko v. Stratford first junior match'played at Stratford on May 19 reported that although the match was timed to begin at 2.30; the first player did not appear till 2.45; and it was impossible to begin the match unutil 2.55 p.m. It was resolved to draw the attention of the Referees ’Association to the matter.
The - Taranaki Referees’ Association submitted the names of the following to control representative games: Messrs, J. 'S. King, F. J. Eggleton, G. Hooker, A. E. Sprattj L. H. Clapham and J. F. Kiley. ■
