MISUSE ALLEGED
LIQUOR ON RIVER BOATS.
POLICE OPPOSE LICENSE.
Wanganui, June 6. Alleging the misuse of a packet license to cell liquor, held by the Wanganui River Services, Ltd., the police opposed an application for renewal of the license’ for river boats at the annual meeting of the Wanganui. Licensing Committee to-day. After evidence was heard on. both sides the committee adjourned for one week. The license, which has been held for some 40 years, permitted the sale of liquor on five boats trading between Wanganui Town Bridge and Taumarunui, and was subsequently limited to boats running between Wanganui and Wheuatere, and Wanganui and Kirikau. The police maintained that for the license to be valid, the boats had to make through trips, but counsel for applicant contended that the licence was valid on any part of the journey, the fact of the terminal points of the journey being mentioned not necessarily prohibiting the sale of liquor when the boats were making trips between those points. Jt was stated in evidence that liquor was never sold to picnic parties, and the bar was open on the river boats only when on scheduled passenger and mail runs.
The police also contended that the boats trading at points on the river above Pipiriki required a separate license from the Waimarino licensing authority.
