ALLEGED FALSE PRETENCE
INSURANCE ON MOTOR-CARS. COMPANY DIRECTOR CHARGED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Napier, Last Night. - William Ebenezer Hyslop, managing director of the Tourist Motor Co., Ltd., was charged before the Chief Justice, Sir Michael Myers, in the Supreme Court to-day that on or about November 11, with intend, to defraud, he attempted to obtain from the United Insurance Co., Ltd., the sum of £125 by false pretences. It was alleged that when making a claim on a seven-seater car destroyed by fire on October 23, 1931, he falsely represented that the car was purchased by Alex Ralston Wyllie for £l6O, whereas the car,was purchased for a sum not exceeding £llO, and further, that he falsely represented to the company that Wyllie,paid £5O in cash on the date of the purchase, whereas he knew Wyllie had not paid £5O. It was further alleged that Hyslop falsely represented that the cash value of the car was £l5O, and that its value immediately before the fire was £l5O, whereas the cash value of the car was not more than £lOO. Hyslop was also further charged that on or about July 3, 1931, with intent to defraud, he obtained £l9O from the Southern Union General Insurance Co. of Australasia, Ltd., by falsely representing that Wyllie had paid a £lOO cash deposit on the purchase of another car, whereas he knew that sum had not been paid. Hyslop peladed not guilty. Lengthy evidence dealing with the transactions alleged in the charge followed the Crown Prosecutor’s opening, and the hearing was adjourned until to-morrow.
