RELIEF WORK PAYMENT
CRITICISM OF NEW SCHEME. PROTEST TO THE GOVERNMENT. The effect of the proposed regulations regarding the allocation of the rates of payment for relief work as from Alay 1 was discussed by 150 Hawera unemployed men at a meeting last night, when Air. J. E. Campbell, secretary of the unemployment committee, presided. It was the general opinion that the small increase in the monthly sum received by the unemployed man through the elimination of the “stand down” week would barely cover the cost of food and the wear and tear on clothes that would be incurred by the extra days of work. It was also pointed out that the change meant cutting down the time in which the men could look for work other than relief.
The following resolutions were carried:
(1) That this representative meeting of Hawera. unemployed strongly disapproves of the Government's action in reducing the. relief rates of pay from 12s 6d and 9s to 10s and 7s 6d a day, and strongly urges the Government to reveit to the original rates of 12s. 6d .a day throughout the whole classification of days worked. (2) That no relief worker be paid less than T2s 6d a day. Copies are to be sent to the Leadei of the Opposition and the member, for the district as well as to the Alinister in charge of unemployment. The men. were most reasonable in their argument and the subject was discussed from every viewpoint. The question of forming a kind of self-help" club and the matter of a small levy on its members was left to the men’s committee. The following new members were elected to this committee: Messrs. S. B. Tysoe, G. F. Wallis, L. H. Voyle and L. B. Owen. Adjutant McKenzie was elected honorary treasurer.
