NO MONEY FOR RAILWAYS
WORLD LINES IN DIFFICULTY “CONSTRUCTION THING OF PAST” MR. FORBES’ ANSWER TO REQUEST PROMISE OF PROFIT UNFULFILLED By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. “Putting money into railway construction is a thing of the past,” remarked the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes) in .replying to a deputation from the Buller district today when a request was made that the Westport-Inangahua railway line, upon, which work has been' stopped, should be completed and that the labour should be paid for out of the unemployment fund. “People wilt not lend money for that purpose now as railways all over the world- are in-difficulties,” Mr. Forbes said.
Mr. Forbes made some observations upon the treatment various other lines had received after their completion, and he complained that although the greatest promise had often been held out for the profit a line would show, the people of the district had. too often decided to use other means of transport after large sums had been spent in providing a railway.
