CORRESPONDENCE

BOROUGH SERVICE OR DESPOTISM? (To the Editor.) Sir,—ln your report in the issue of the 19th instant of the New Plymouth Borough Council’s last meeting it is stated that the council agreed to admit me to confer over the stormwater drainage con troverey. Such was incorrect, as shown by official advice now to hand that I ave been boycotted by “closure,” personally, ns by correspondence. The facts are a whilst Councillors P. E. Stainton and K. .Pentecost approved, Councillors R. *¥• Robertson and J. Brown, of the works com mittee, rejected the proposal to gi' e me a hearing, whilst the Mayor and other councillors followed the dictatorship of , e works committee, adversely adopted throughout my negotiations for amicable settlement of matters. The reference to my solicitors, showing, a penchant towards legal proceedings, discloses an indolent and extravagant course, calculated to wantonly waste ratepayers’ money, when a commonsense view of conditions could effect a rea sonable settlement of matters . consistent with honouring, instead of violating, a specific agreement entered into by a previous council, covering all time. At the council’s attitude I protest. There are, by the way, two lawyers at present includ ed in the “closure” coheric, countenancing violation of the above-mentioned agreement, and resultant imposition upon me of unnecessary damage, danger, and nuisance. —I am, etc., BENONI WHITE.
