ELTHAM TENNIS GAMES.

CHAMPIONSHIP WINNERS.

The tennis season has. concluded at Eltham, although, no official ceremony was held. Full advantage was taken of the fine weather to play as long as possible. There were several closely contested games for the buttons, the, final holders being Clifford-Jones and Miss Clifford-Jones. Acting on a report by Mr. K. Syme, the courts were re-sown, top-dressed and sprayed, and as a result of the recent warm rains the turf is now showing considerable rejuvenation and promises an excellent surface for next season. The winners of the respective championships are:— Men’s singles: H. Wills; runner-up, G. Gordon. Ladies’ singles: Miss P. Wood; run-ner-up, Mis® B. Walker. Men’s doubles: G. Gordon and G. H. Percy. Ladies’ doubles: Miss P. Wood and Mrs. R. Lee. Combined doubles: Morrison and Miss L. Ritter.

UNEMPLOYED COMBINE.

EFFORT TO. ASSIST THEMSELVES.

Over 40 unemployed men of Stratford met in the Parish Hall, on Tuesday night with a view to working in concert in preparations for the winter months. The deputy-Mayor, Mr. N. B. Fletcher, presided, with him on the platform being Mr. A. H. Nelson, of the Borough Council, and Mr. T. R. Anderson, of the Unemployment Committee. The following executive, which will appoint a representative on the Unemployment Committee, was elected: Messrs Allen, Holmes, Blair, McDonald, Ireland, Sullivan and Hunt. One of the chief duties of the executive, the chairman said, would he to deal with any complaint® the men might have to make and to lodge them in the proper quarter. He assured the unemployed that they would receive the support of the townspeople. Mr. Anderson said a representative of the unemployed would be welcomed on tho committee. Various suggestions designed to help the unemployed were made and the executive was giver, ample indication of the lines along which it could commence to function. NEW BOOKS AT ELTHAM.
