OPUNAKE GOLF SEASON

REPORT ON YEAR’S ACTIVITIES. Following is the report to be presented at the annual meeting of the Opunake Golf Club this fevening: — The committee while regretting that the finances of the club have not improved feels that from the point of view of play and appointments considerable progress has been made. Membership has been increased and the links very much improved, the greens with one exception being in splendid order during last season. This improvement is due to a large extent to extra expenditure made from time to time, the effect of which is not immediately apparent. Extra expenditure last season amounted to about £l5 and it is not anticipated that any such expenditure will be necessary during. the coming season, so that a much improved financial position may be expected. It is felt also that general working costs can be epnsider-

ably reduced with subsequent benefit to members. Already a very successful working-bee has been held which will save the club about f 4, so that it can be seen what, a little practical assistance by members can do for the club. From the playing point of view the season was the most successful the club has experienced for both men and ladies. The senior championship was won by J. N. Stephenson, with D. Fraser runnerup. The junior championship was won by C. H. Marcroft with P. Harding run-ner-up; the Boyle Cup by C. H. Marcroft with C. 0. Edmonds runner-up; the Waiau Cup by G. Gundy. The ladies’ senior championship was won by Mrs. R. J. Morris with Mrs. Oliver runner-up and the junior event by Miss Trotter with, Miss Hinch runner-up. Numerous inter-club. matches were played with a fair measure of success, these matches

being an outstanding feature of the season. The committee hopes that despite the present difficult times there will be no loss in members...p. The club’s subscriptions are probably as low as those of any club in New Zealand and with the improvements in the links players will undoubtedly obtain better playing facilities.
