RUGBY FOOTBALL REFEREES

CENTRAL DIVISION ASSOCIATION. ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING. The first herald of the approach of the Rugby season at Stratford was the annual meeting of the Central Taranaki Referees’ Association held last night. Mr. L. J. Furrie presided over 12 members. The membership, stated the report, had been well ■maintained and was 22 active members and a life member. During the season members had controlled over 90 senior and junior matches with apparent satisfaction to the teams. The committee felt that with its present membership the division should be-in a position to supply more senior referees. It behoved all members to strive for the higher qualification by close study and application to the rules. All promising referees should have their claims for promotion advanced by the classification committee.

The committee considered it would be in the interests of the division if the regular weekly’ meetings were reverted to. Although the work of the appointment board had met with general approval, the system of appointment in the division had resulted in the old system of regular meetings of the members being dropped. It would be in the interests of the efficiency of members if they could gather regularly for interchange of experiences and discussions of rules. The - division would be entitled to -two members on the senior appointment board during the coming season. Thanks were due to Mr. H. C- Johnson for his services as a member of the board. An endeavour should be made by every member to secure new members. Credit was due to the secretary, Mr. C. Pellovve, whose efforts on behalf of the association had been unsparing. The balance-sheet showed a credit of £2 17s 6d.

Mr. Johnson said the junior appointment board had been instituted because it had not always been convenient for all members to attend a weekly ingMr. F. Brisco contended that weekly.. meetings were too frequent, but he certainly favoured the holding of some meetings with the objects suggested in the reports. 1 \ Meetings during the year were desirable, said Mr. R. R. Tyrer, but country members could not be expected to attend a weekly meeting. A meeting could be held perhaps every fortnight. i It was decided to have a junior appointment board consisting of Messrs. Johnson, W. Eagar and S. J. Cuff and to hold fortnightly meetings. The election of officers resulted: President, Mr. Brisco; vice-presidents, Messrs. Eagar, Johnson and Furrie; honorary secretary, Mr. 0. Pellowe; delegates to Taranaki executive, Messrs. G. Collins and Pellowe; classification committee, Messrs. Brisco, R. F. Harkness and S. Wanklyn; delegate to union, Mr. Furrie; delegates to senior appointment board, Messrs. Johnson and Furrie.
