RACING AT RICCARTON

ONE-DAY GATHERING TO-DAY.

BLACK DUKE /ND GESTURE WELL.

(By “Hurry On.”) There will be racing at Riccafion today, when the Canterbury Jockey Club will hold its one-day summer meeting. There are plenty of horses in training on the course and th© fields are good. Babel failed at Dunedin, but on her own course may make amends in the Hornby Handicap, though Countermarch and First Raid will hsve friends. _ Niglitguard. is reported to : be an improved horse after his spell, and may give trouble to Night Flyer and Execution in the Trial. The Middle Park Plate wall see Silver Ring a hot favourite. Hilary, however, is sure to go well. The Midsummer Handicap has drawn a good field. Cricket Bat, Black Duke, Ranelagh and Rama all showed good form at Dunedin, while two others in Riri and Lockley are more than useful. However, Black Duke, Cricket Bat and Riri make most appeal. Oratorious is the only one of the Lyttelton Plate field with any public form, but both Rocket and Pacify have shown promise. A good field, will contest the Craven Plate. Spoon’s form has been very consistent this season, Gesture and Princess Argosy won at Dunedin, and Dunraven and Assemble went well, at Trentham. Possibly Gesture, Spoon and Princess Argosy will do best. After his stylish win at Wiugatui The Quorn is sure to be in solid demand in the Halswell Handicap. Niggerhead and Sailor’s Love would appear his most dangerous opponents. ■ Meprisant has a big weight in the Post Handicap and may find it hard to head, off Minerval, Adelphi and Rational 11.
