LIQUOR SOLD AFTER HOURS

DOMINION HOTEL AT HAWERA. MOENSEE AND BARfMAN FINED. As the consequence of certain observations he had made, Sergeant Henry visited the Dominion Hotel, Hawera, on thevening of December 28. As the result of what the sergeant saw, Mr. J. H. Salmon, S.M., yesterday fined John Wholey, the licensee, and John McCarty, his barman, £5 each, smaller fines being imposed on two men who were found in the bar. Wholey was charged with the sale or liquor after hours and exposing liquor for sale after hours, McCarty with supplying liquor after hours, and Walter J. Rawlings and Charles W. Curtis with being on licensed premises after hours. Wholey and McCarty, who were, represented by counsel, pleaded guilty, and the police withdrew the charge of exposing liquor. The bar was lighted at 9.50 pjn. on December 28, and in it were four men, two of whom were boarders, stated Sergeant Henry. The two who were not boarders had no excuse to offer for their presence. Counsel said that on the day in question Wholey had returned from New Plymouth about 7.30 p.m. and gone to the pictures. McCarty, who was a newcomer to the hotel, opened the bar to supply two boarders, when two other men walked in. Not knowing that these were not boarders also, he supplied them. Wholey had given McCarty instructions not to supply anyone but boarders. As far as the charges against the two other men were concerned, the sergeant said the offence of drinking after hours was on the increase in Hawcrai Counsel for Curtis stated that his client was an old man and normally lawabiding. He was one of the pioneers of the district. Curtis and Rawlings were each fined £2. PROHIBITION ORDERS. HAWERA PENALTIES IMPOSED. Numerous breaches -f prohibition orders were dealt with by Mr. J. H. Salmon, S.M., at Hawera yesterday. Arising out of these offences were others of supplying liquor to prohibited persons and other charges. William Robinson wa-. charged with procuring liquor for a prohibited person, Joseph P. Collins, against whom the breach of a prohibition order was alleged. On November 28 Constable Lemm and Detective Meiklejohn, visited Collins’ house and found Collins and Robinson sitting at a table with bottles of beer on it.

Collins said Robinson called in to see him and suggested a drink. He did not think Robinson knew he was a prohibited person and had not liked to tell him. Collins pleaded guilty and was fined £l. The charge against Robinson, who pleaded not guilty, was dismissed. Constable Lemm gave evidence of his visit to the house. Cross-examined, the constable said he went to the house for another purpose. Robinson had denied he knew the other man was prohibited. Collins said he had only known Robinson for a fortnight before the breach. Robinson was going home and had two bottles in his pocket. He suggested “christening” witness’ recently-born baby. Robinson came for some plants. Cross-examined," the witness said he did not tell Robinson of the prohibition order. Robinson told the court that he had not known Collins was prohibited. There was no arrangement that he should take the beer round. When he heard that Collins had a baby he suggested “wetting its head.” THREE CLUBS RUNNING LEVEL. SHIELD BOWLING COMPETITION. A triple tie in the Wednesday section of the southern division of the shield bowling competition is the result of Opunake’s win over Hawera yesterday. Park, Hawera, and Opunake are now level and will have to play off. Until yesterday's game, the last in the competition, Hawera were leadin by two points from Park and Opunake. They lost at Opunake by the margin of 16 points, while Park beat Manaia. On the Park green at Hawera, Park easily defeated Manaia by 123 points to S 3. Results are:— ■ „ M. P. In a match on the Hawera green yesterday for the A gold buttons the challengers (Rudge, Clarke, Robertson and Foy) defeated the holders (Hobbs, Janson, Adamson and Masiin) by 34 points to 18. GENERAL ITEMS. A remand until January 27 was granted yesterday in the Hawera Court by Mr. J. H. Salmon, S.M., When Thomas Rosewarne was charged with four offences on Christmas Eve. Drunkenness was alleged, resisting arrest, indecent language and an assault upon William Hayward. HAWERA OPERA HOUSE. HOLIDAY MATINEE TO-DAY. Two important players in the cast of “Holiday” were members of the original Broadway company playing in this Philip Barry stage success. Elizabeth Forrester, who will be seen as “Laura Cram” in the screen play, played, the role of “Julie,’’ in New York. Mary Astor fills this part in the picture. Monroe Owsley will be seen in the part he created on the stage. Ann Harding has the featured lead in which will be seen and heard at the Hawera Opera House at to-day’s matinee and on Thursday and Friday evenings. Edward Everett Horton, Robert Ames, Hedda Hopper, Creighton Hale, Ma'bel Forrest, Hallam Cooley and William Holden are in the supporting cast.
