SECESSION MOVEMENT
WEST AUSTRALIA’S POSITION.’ The movement for secession from ths Australian Commonwealth.- recently begun in Western Australia, has not been advanced since an attempt to pass a Bill through both Houses for a referendum was defeated, according to Sir Charles Nathan, M.L.C., of Western Australia, who is on a holiday visit of five weeks to New Zealand. There was no doubt that there was a considerable feeling in the State in favour of secession, said Sir Charles. One of the principal pointe in the movement had been the relation of Western Australia as a primary producing State to the high tariffs of the Commonwealth. It was felt by those behind the movement that Western Australia’s position in that respect did not agree with that of other States. Sir Charles formerly resided in Christchurch for 17 years, and Lady Nathas is a New Zealander.
