OLD HOMESTEAD BURNED

FIRE ON GLENARVON ESTATE. HOUSE BUILT ABOUT 1863. Fire destroyed one of the oldest homesteads in New Plymouth on Monday eight-roomed house on the Glenarvon estate, owned and occupied by Mr. T. E. Mack. The house, just beyond the Waiwakaiho River, was, with all its contents, totally destroyed. The origin of the blaze is uncertain, though it is believed a faulty kitchen chimney might have been responsible. The fire originated in that part, of the house. Mrs. Mack and two of thofamily were at home and escaped with a few personal effects. No water was available. The house wae built about 1863 by the Richardson family, pioneer settlers in the district. About four years ago the present owner had extensive renovations and repairs carried out. The house Was insured for £.700 and the furniture for £3OO, both in the Atlas Office. Originally the Glenavon estate was owned by*Captain Davy, of the East' India Company, and one of the eettlerw who arrived by the Amelia Thompson. The original homestead was built at this time, but was destroyed by the natives during the Maori War of 1860. The later homestead was built shortly after, the war.
