SEVEN-FOLD TRAGEDY
MURDERER BESIEGED.
THIRTEEN HOURS’ BATTLE.
Lisbon, Jan. 6.
A seven-fold tragedy occurred in the village of Beja, in Southern Portugal, following an accusation of stealing barley against a farm worker, Antonio Mattos, .and his wife. The woman confessed to the theft. Mattos denied complicity, but was imprisoned. The wife, fearing her husband’s wrath, strangled herself in prison. Mattos was released eight weeks later and vowed vengeance. He shot the farmer who had accused him; also the fanner’s mother and brother. Then Mattos retired to his cottage, and, having sent out his seven children, opened ' furious fire upon the besieging police, killing the chief and wounding others. r < a Reinforcements of Republican Guards, with machine-guns, arrived. Mattos sniped the leader and wounded two others. When his cottage was set on fire Mattos climbed to the loft and continued to shoot until he was killed by machinegun bullets after a battle of 13 hours.
