APPEAL TO KING
REMOVAL OF MR. J. T. LANG PETITION FROM NEW GUARD “SHALL NOT OPEN BRIDGE” POSSIBILITY OF ELECTION N.S.W. PEOPLE PREPARING By Telegraph—Press Assn.— Copyright. Sydney, Jan. 12. The petition of the New Guard to the King praying for the dissolution of the New South Wales Assembly declares that certain members of Parliament are -protecting disloyalists. Communists and seditionists aro allowed to use school buildings for the propagation of seditious doctrines. They have even appointed persons to the Legislative Council who are avowedly disloyal. The Government has repudiated its debts to bondholders and has enacted , legislation gravely infringing the rights of the people. The petition is being circulated throughout New South Wales and is expected to be extensively signed.
“The people of New South Wales will not permit Mr. Lang to open the Sydney Harbour Bridge,” stated Colonel Campbell, leader of the New Guard. “We in our generation will be for ever dishonoured if we allow Mr. Lang to open the bridge, and we of the New Guard will tell him now that he will not -be given that honour. Let us see that somebody of quality, if possible some Prince of the Royal Blood, will open it on behalf of the people of this State.”
Reverting to the petition to the King Colonel Campbell said: “If it is not granted then I will put before you for adoption other means," quite lawful -and appreciated by constitutional lawyers of high standing but, believe me, very effective.” The possibilities of an early State election resulting in the defeat of the Lang. Government were discussed by the executive of the New South Wales National Association.
Public meetings will be called immediately throughout the State to form branches of the United Australian Party. The deputy-president, Colonel Playfair, said that owing to the probability of an early State election it was considered essential that steps be taken immediately to unite all the forces opposed to Communism and the administration of the Lang Government. The Federal Australian Labour Party executive has decided to organise the Federal forces against the Lang-planners for the next elections, “whether State or Federal.” LEGAL ACTION SUGGESTED. CONSIDERATION BY CABINET. Rec. 12.30 a.m. Sydney, Jan. 12. Mr. Lang’s Cabinet to-day considered the attitude of the New Guard, also the statements made by its leader, Colonel Eric Campbell, about the Lang administration with a view to taking legal action against him. VICTORIAN “SILENT KNIGHTS.” ORGANISATION ANNOUNCED. Rec. 8.10 p.m. Melbourne, Jan. 12. An organisation styled the “Order of Silent Knights” has announced itself in Melbourne. Its objects are similar to those of the New Guard of New South Wales. The organisation has been in existence for twelve months but has refrained from making a public announcement until it cleared up questions regarding its legality. Its present strength is two thousand. It is not affiliated with the New Guard.
