BRITISH REPLY TO GERMANY. DEMAND FOR RETALIATION. By Telegraph—Press Assn. —Copyright. Rec. 5.5 p.m. Berlin, Dec. 19. Although sympathising with the German claim for a discussion on the new British duties, Britain has informed Germany that at present it cannot see its way to negotiate as withdrawal of the duties is impossible. The German reply maintains that Germany is entitled to a free hand in subsequent measures. The Centre Party in the Prussian Diet is already demanding restriction on imports of British coal as a retaliatory measure.
