COMPETITIONS AT SCHOOL. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The Norfolk school waa visited last week by Mr. D. Mackay, senior agricultural instructor, Mt. Washer, Mr. Andrews, Mr. Grant an-d Mr. H. Trimble, when the judging for the calf-rearing competition took place, the result* oi which have already appeared on the Daily News. Mr. Grant judged the pet lambs and the prizes were awarded as follow: Barney Wicksteed 1, Roy Huzziff 2, Jeff Huzziff 3, Gladys Huzziff 4, June Laurence 5. , Judged by Mr. W. M. -Dill-Mackay, agricultural instructor, the Norfolk school home garden plots were visited in burn, and points of advantage or dieadvantage in each were discussed. Thus there was provided a valuable lesson to the young gardeners, who accompanied Mr. Mackay, and who gained many hints for improvement in their own plots. A{r. Alackay intends 'judging the plots again in February—an excellent plan, as it provides for the continuation of the very fine work already done in some of the plots. The results were as follow: —- _ Senior vegetable plots: Jean Ritchie, 96 marks (most uniform and best growth) 1; Ted Whitaker, 96 marks (best preparation and finish); Eddie Coflsey, 71 marks; Leonard Beale, 70; Bill Brown, 66. ‘ Junior vegetable plots: Bob Brown, 97 marks (best plot of all); Bernie Dodunski. 79 marks: Norma Ward, 76 marks. -Senior flower plots: Nancy Brown, 89 marks (best display of flowers); Thelma Brown, 85; Patricia Brown, 65; Polly Surrey, 64. Junior flower plots: Betty Egarr, 95 marks (a very fine plot, indeed); Valerie Voitrekovsky, 71; Eileen Beale, 63 (a very good plot for a t’UI. girl). . Last Sunday was the aniver-sary of the Norfolk Sunday achdol, and all those who ' were fortunate enough to attend were treated to an excellent sacred concert given by the children. The . Rev. McGregor, Waitara, conducted the service, and the music was supplied by Mesdamee L. and W. Brown and Miss Pat Brown. Alisss Daphne Taylor, Fitzroy, sang two solos and Alias Esther Wright gave a splendid elocutionary item. ‘ Airs. Wright, who has given her services to the Sunday school for a number of years, is to be congratulated on the results obtained. After the service and prize-giving a very enjoyable' afternoon tea was iserved.-
Mesdames Kaye and Burgess on Monr day. motored to Ngaire and. Kaponga, where they assisted to form two branches of the Women’s/Institute. The institute movement is growing rapidly. Mrs. Allen, Durham Road, was unfortunate to lose a valuable horse, which dropped dead while travelling along the road near Inglewood. A post mortem examination revealed a broken blood vessel due to the horse taking fright at the steam roller.
