FRENCH SURTAX IMPOST
DIFFERENCE IN CHAMBER DEFEAT OF THE GOVERNMENT SENT BACK TO COMMITTEE EFFECT ON LIVING COSTS By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Rec. 7 p.m. ’ Paris, Dec. 8. The Chamber of Deputies voted by 325 to 261 to refer the Surtax Bill imposing 15 per cent, on Anglo-Australian imports and 7 per cent, on Indian, back to the agriculture committee for amendment. The defeat does not involve the Government’s resignation. The increase was criticised as tending to raise the cost of living and intensify the economic crisis.
The surtax was suggested as a result ol the depreciation of the British Empire countries’ currencies. Exemptions included goods hitherto exempted from duty and goods for which a world market existed and the market price for which was not influenced by variations in the national currencies. France thus anticipated a British tariff with a bargaining weapon.
