AMATEUR ATHLETIC MEETING
GOOD PERFORMANCE BY S. BLACK. A good performance was put up by S A. Black at the weekly sports meeting held by the New Plymouth Amateur Athletic Club at Pukekura Park on Tuesday. Black won the 100 yards in 10 l-'osec off li yards. Keen competition and fine finishes were in evidence in most events.. Details are:— ’ 120 "yards' hurdles: H. L. Thomson (■oyds) ‘l, G. Pauli (12yds and 2 down) 2. The only starters. Won comfortably. Time, 16 4-ssec. Half-mile cycle: D. 'Patten (loOyds) 1, J. Hutchinson (130yds) 2, D. Ayson (100yds) 3. Also started: N. Batten (05yds), J. Gillies (30yds). There were big breaks between the placed men. Time, Imin 0 4-ssec. 100 yards. A grade: —First heat: <l. Pankhurst (Oyds) 1, S. A. Black (1J yds) 2, H. L. Thomson (Siyds) 3. 'Black made a great effort to get up, but failed by a foot. Thomson was close up. Time, 10 l-'ssec. ■Second heat: F. Frethey (7yds) 1, J. Warner (12yds) 2, N. Webster (10yds) 3. Also started: G. Pauli (l'2yds). iWon by a foot, with a similar distance between second and third., Time, 10 2-ssec. ’Final: Black 1, Pankhurst and Thomson equal 2. This event provided a wonderful finish, Black makin<r a great effort to forge through at the tape, with three others right behind him. Time, 10 l-'ssec. Ladies’ 100 yards: Miss T. Lister (16 yds) and Miss R. Jones ('Syds) equal 1, Miss N. Beal 3. A good finish. Time, 12scc* 100 yards, B grade: M- Courtenay (6yds) 1, J. 'Frethey (flyds) 2, 'F. Parfitt (Bvda) 3. Also started: M. Stevens (Oyds) and M. Boyle (Byds). Frethey led most of the way, but Courtenay, finishing fast, got up in time. Time, 12sec. Two mile ihandicap: »S» Alsop t(3ooyds) 1, L. E. Fox (150yds) 2, A. Sadler (300yds) 3. Also started: F. J. Cooper, N. C. Drake, A. S. Eaddy (400yds), L. Thomson and * . J. 'Thompson (300yds). Alsop was ahead with three-quarters of a mile to go and, although Fox passed all the others he could make no impression on. Alsop, who won by the length of the straight, with Sadler 10 yards behind Fox and Drake fourth. Time, 9min 46scc. One mile cycle: P. Adlam (230yds) 1, D. Patten (250yds) 2, J. Hutchinson (230yds) 3. Also started: J. F. Gillies (60yds), N, C. Batten (120yds), D. Ayson (150yds). 'Won by a length, with Hutchinson 10 yards away third. Time, 2min 21sec. Ladies’ long jump: T. bister (3ft 2m) 35ft Din 1, R. Jones (oin) l'sft sin 2, J. Bennoch (3ft Oin) 15ft 2in 3. Ladies’ putting the shot: J. Bennoch (7ft Gin) 26ft 2in 1, R. Jones (7ft) 24ft lin 2, 'N. Beal (2ft Sin) 23ft Sin 3. Ladies’ relay: B. team (Misses Cliff, Bennoch and Reilly) .10yds 1, A team (Misses Lister, Beal and R. Jones) scr 2. The A team won easily but was disqualified for a faulty change over. Time, 42 l-'sscc. / High jump: H. G. Kingston _ (7Jin) sft 7in 1, G. ’Sullivan (4Jin) sft 6in 2, C. Robertson (oin) sft sin 3. Robertson (45yds) 2, D. McKee (40yds) 3. Eight started. The first three men had a great struggle in the straight, Hoby winning by about a yard, with MdKee close up, and H. L. Thomson, the virtual scratch man, fourth. Time, 5.1 2-ssec.
