PIPES BURST BY FROST

HEAVY LOSSES OF WATER.

POSITION IN CHRISTCHURCH.

An interesting report on the waste of water caused by the bursting of pipes owing to the severe frosts experienced recently was submitted to a meeting of the Christchurch City Council by the Water Supply Committee. The increase in the volume of water pumped at the Cashmere station due to burs’t pipes was well over half a million gallons a day, and during the night on two occasions” it was found necessary to keep an extra pump going in order to cope with the draw-off. Mr. M. E. Lyons said he thought that where it was proved that the consumption of water was unduly high on account of burst pipes, the council might agree to bear part of the burden, instead of imposing the full charge on the unfortunate consumers.

Mr. J. W. Beanland, chairman of the committee, said that the question of making rebates to people who used a large quantity of water owing to burst pipes was before the committee at its last meeting, but finality was not reached.
