Christchurch, Last Night.
Swimming 75 yards through icy water at Governor’s Bay, at the head of Lyttelton harbour, this evening, G. Healey rescued J. Manhire from drowning after Manhire had fallen into the sea from the jetty. Manhire is a moderate swimmer, "but was hampered by heavy clothes. Carried by the outgoing tide, he appeared twenty yards from the shore calling for help and drifting out rapidly. A lifebuoy was thrown, but failed to reach him.
Mr. Healey then stripped and swam out with a rope, reaching Manhire when he was 75 yards from the shore. A third man pulled them in to safety. Manhire was exhausted when he reached the jetty.
