GLASGOW M.P. PROSECUTED

SPOKE WITHOUT PERMISSION

“WILL CONTINUE CAMPAIGN.”

By Telegraph—Press Assn.— Copyright. London, Aug. 4.

J. McGovern, M.P., and eight others were fined £3 in default 20 days’ imprisonment for speaking on the Glasgow Green without permission. McGovern exclaimed from the dock; “I don’t want time to pay. I will goyto prison,” but as McGovern’s counsel, asked that time be given the magistrate ordered that ten days be allowed in which to pay. McGovern declares his intention of persisting in the free speech campaign.

On July 31 scenes unprecedented in the history of the Scottish Courts marked the opening of the trial of McGovern, and a number of “tram preachers” and Communists, who were charged with speaking without a permit on the Glasgow Green. Crowds entered the court preceded by a preacher bearing a Cross, which he refused to remoye. Hymn singing, followed until the magistrate’s arrived, whereupon McGovern and his comrades stood up and led the boisterous singing of “Stand up, stand up, for Jesus.” The magistrate ordered the court to be cleared.
