ENGLISH TROPHY MATCH
OTAGO DEFEATS WELLINGTON. FIRST CHALLENGE OF SEASON. By Telwepk.—Pr®»» Aiioeiatioa. Wellington, Aug. 1. The Wellington Soccer team was defeated by Otago in the first challenge match for the English Trophy in a fast open game to-day.' Otago forwards showed much better combination and although Wellington led by two goals to one at half-time the challengers in the. second spell showed marked superiority and the game ended four goals to three in favour of Otago. The game was full of interest and several, times the custodians of both sides affected good saves. McDougall, for the visitors was particularly brilliant, winning thunderous applause .for averting a score at a critical moment in the game. Wellington maintained strong pressure to the end but the dashing combined movements of the visitors smashed many attacks and carried play into Wellington territory.

Association football results reported by the Press Association are:— Auckland. —Tra,murewa 2 beat Onchunga 1. . _ Christchurch. —Western 5 beat New Brighton 0, Rangers 2 beat Marists 0. Greymouth. —Inter-provincial match: Westland 3 defeated Canterbury 1 on a muddy field.
